Interdisciplinary Courses
Working abroad represents a big challenge and requires high professional qualifications. As the necessary knowledge and
skills for foreign missions stem from various medical specialties the emergence of new interdisciplinary medical
specialties which comprise the knowledge of different medical fields could be seen. Examples are emergency medicine,
travel medicine, family planning and gender, the field of sexually transmitted diseases, furthermore the fields of
nutrition, pain management and rehabilitation.
Due to increasing demand in this year’s edition of the course catalogue courses concerned with “Oncology” and
“Mental health” were introduced.
Methods used in emergency medicine are drawn from all other medical specialties and aim at pre-clinical first aid for
the emergency patient. As new methods keep evolving in this field it is necessary to frequently update ones knowledge
in order to be able to provide efficient help. Courses listed in the section "Emergency medicine" are divided into
regional and international courses.
"Travel medicine" is a rather new field and uses knowledge drawn from established medical specialties such as
tropical medicine, public health, parasitology and microbiology, as such travel medicine deals with all kinds of
travel related medical queries.
The part about "Family planning & gender" lists courses focusing on family planning, women’s health, and
women’s rights.
The global spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary
cooperation, therefore relevant courses were included in our course catalogue.
The heading "Nutrition" includes courses about the development and implementation of longterm nutritional programs
as well as courses dealing with nutritional emergency programs needed during humanitarian crisis.
Further courses about "Pain Management" and "Rehabilitation" were listed in this main chapter.
